Khyber Girls Medical College, Peshawar

There was a dire need in NWFP to have a medical college for girls. Such a
facility already exists in Punjab in the name of Fatima Jinnah Medical College
Lahore and in Sindh in the name of People’s Medical College Nawabshah where only
female students are admitted. The Government of N.W.F.P took a policy decision
in this regard and in August 2003 the Provincial Cabinet approved the
establishment of a separate Girls Campus of Khyber Medical College located at
Hayatabad with an object to upgrade the same to an independent Girls Medical
College in due course of time. The Girls Campus of K.M.C started functioning in
PDA Block-IV, Phase-V Hayatabad and admitted First Batch of 50 students during
the Academic Session 2004-05.

The Chief Minister N.W.F.P during the inauguration ceremony of Girls Campus, KMC
on 13th May 2006 announced the upgradation of Girls Campus KMC to an independent
college “Khyber Girls Medical College” w.e.f 8th December 2005. Hayatabad
Medical Complex and Govt. Lady Reading Hospital are its teaching hospitals.
Afghan Commissionerate Building on its vacation, has been notified to be the
Hostel accommodation of K.G.M.C. The Provincial Government has approved creation
of 159 additional posts of Teaching and Para-medical staff to fulfil the staff
requirements of K.G.M.C. Recruitment of K.G.M.C. own teachers is in the process
of selection through NWFP. Public Service Commission to be completed soon. Till
completion of its own faculties, the teaching staff of KMC will continue to
teach the students of K.G.M.C.

The Departments of Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry of Khyber Girls Medical
College have well established/well equipped Laboratories, Lecture Theatres,
Dissection Hall, Anatomy Museum, an S.L.R.C., and two Libraries one for staff
and the other for students with sufficient number of latest editions of Text
Books, Reference Books, and Journals. The Departments of Pharmacology,
Pathology, Forensic Medicine and Community Medicine have also been established.
This institution has admitted 4th Batch of 50 students of First Year MBBS Class
during the Academic Session 2007-08.
